Felipe Echeverry (b. 1988, Cali, Colombia) is an artist whose dynamic practice merges abstraction and figuration, exploring themes of movement, color, and the human experience. Originally trained as an architect, Echeverry transitioned to painting in 2015, drawn to the expressive potential of the medium. His architectural background remains a foundational influence, with early sketches and drawings informing the compositional structure of his work.
Echeverry’s paintings evolved from early explorations of the immigrant experience—capturing the emotional challenges and stresses of displacement to a mature engagement with figurative expressionism. Inspired by artists such as Willem de Kooning, Georg Baselitz, and Markus Lüpertz, his work navigates the tension between structure and fluidity, echoing the rhythms of music and the natural movement of the world around him.
At the heart of his current practice is a deep connection to his roots in Cali, Colombia, where the vibrant pulse of salsa music and the dynamic landscapes of Valle del Cauca inform his art. The natural sway of the caña brava—a tall plant with yellow, tail-like blooms—mirrors the grace of dancers, its movement captured in energetic, expressive brushstrokes. In this way, Echeverry’s vibrant compositions become a visual symphony that fuses color, sound, and nature into a unified exploration of human and environmental rhythm.
Echeverry’s work has been exhibited at prestigious institutions, including the Museo de Arte Moderno in Mexico City, Museo Tamayo, and Museo Kaluz for Arte Vivo. He has had solo exhibitions with Avant Gallery in New York and Miami, and participated in Art Basel with the gallery. Additionally, he collaborated with Saks Fifth Avenue and Good Luck dry Cleaners for a special presentation during New York Fashion Week. His work is featured in private collections across the globe, including prominent collectors.
